The Moment had arrived. The Olympic flame was several yards away, heading toward Kach. His family and friends whirled around him. His mother, fluorescent pink fingernails tapping on a video recorder, began to weep behind the eye of the camera.Amid it all, Kach smiled. I've been through worse spots than this,'' he said. The stress of carrying the torch for one leg of its pass through Connecticut Wednesday paled in comparison to his fight against bacterial meningitis as a college student. The illness brought Kach, 20, to the brink of death. It hospitalized him for nine months and forced doctors to amputate his fingers, his right foot and part of his left foot.Hold it tightly, Kach thought Wednesday, as the flame in the torch carried by the runner before him kissed his 3 pound, icicle shaped torch. He then turned around and started walking at a fast clip down Main Street, trying not to forget that, at that moment, he was the only person in the world carrying the Olympic torch.John, you can slow down,'' yelled his mother, Paige, as she struggled to keep up with him for the two tenths of a mile leg, weaving between spectators four rows deep. You can go slower, you are all right.''Kach was one of dozens of people who carried the flame through New Haven, Wethersfield and Hartford. The route through the state was part of a journey through 46 states that ends, in February, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the site of the 2002 Winter Olympics. The relay halted briefly for a late afternoon ceremony in Hartford's Bushnell Park. Billy Smith, the 15 year old cousin of Takira Gaston, the girl who was hit in the face this past summer by a stray bullet in her North End Hartford neighborhood, carried the torch the final two tenths of a mile to the park stage. With 8 year old Takira at his side, Smith lit the ceremonial cauldron, which burned in the city for 30 minutes before the flame was taken to Providence for the night.I feel happy happy as hell,'' Smith said on stage. The relay route was lined with individuals who have, in some way, inspired the community with their personal triumphs: a breast cancer survivor, an elementary school teacher who runs a food bank, a woman battling the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Then there is Kach, a soft spoken giant wearing an Olympic committee issued running suit and white hat.His father, Mike, sewed a pair of white Olympic gloves to the special gloves that allowed Kach to carry the torch. No one along the relay route could really tell that Kach had none of his full fingers. Or that, under his running suit, he wore a prosthetic leg.The kid, he just surprises me,'' said his father, teary eyed. He just amazes me. The infection is potentially fatal and tends to affect young people living close to one another, such as in a college dorm. He never got around to getting one.The timing of the illness was bad. He just finished his first season on the basketball team. He had a girlfriend. He was indulging in the freedoms of college. Then he found himself in the hospital with a strain of meningitis that can kill people more often than it allows them to survive. His weight dropped from 215 pounds to 120. The disease poisoned and clotted his blood, starving his extremities for oxygen. Doctors were forced to do the amputations.Kach has since recovered to the extent that he recently completed his first semester at Salve Regina since he fell ill. A year ago, Kach could barely walk, his father said. By Wednesday, Kach walked at a pace that forced his cheering section to run to keep up with him.He was cool; his family was a wreck. Paige Kach tested her video recorder a half dozen times. Her sister held a Polaroid camera in one hand, a disposable camera in the other. They paced. They smoked.I'm not going to do a very good job,'' Paige Kach said.Just do what you can,'' her husband, Mike, said, reassuring her. When it was all over, beads of sweat rolled down John Kach's face. Strangers thanked him in a tone that made it seem as though he did something personally for them. His arms trembled. Probably the most famous site in the region is Dunn's River Falls and we chose to tour it on our own rather than through one of the cruiseship tours. Once we disembarked from the cruiseship, there were cabs and shuttlebuses available at the pier. Cabs to Dunn's River Falls were $22 US for a return trip. Cabs allowed 1 3 people per vehicle. We were also told at the pier that small shuttlebuses also go to the Falls at $5.50 US per person. These were also based on return trips. The only problem with shuttlebuses was that we had to wait until they filled up the shuttle before leaving for the Falls so since we were the first on the bus, we had to wait about 15 minutes for it to fill up. The driver then asks you when you want to be picked up at the Falls for the return trip. Our driver suggested 2 hours to see the Falls so we agreed on this time duration. Once at the Falls, a woman then came onboard the shuttle to sell tickets for admission to the site at $10 US per adult person which was the same rate at the park's ticket booth. Once inside the Dunn's facility, there were rentals for special rubber shoes as well as lockers. We carried a small backpack so we didn't require paying for a locker. We also brought along our scuba diving booties so we didn't have to rent those rubber shoes on site either. The cruiseship shop was also selling these rubber shoes in advance. Shoes of some type are highly recommended as the rocks on the Falls can be slippery and some of the bottoms of the water pools are a bit rocky. If you have old sneakers you don't mind getting wet, they will be suitable for the climb up the falls as well. Our scuba diving booties turned out to be sufficient. The entrance to the site is at the top of the falls so we took some stairs that were adjacent to the falls to the bottom where the beach and entrance to the climb were. There are official guides dressed in blue polo shirts and shorts who will take groups up the falls. Normally, they will ask to carry all cameras for you so they can take photos of you as you climb. Of course, they expect to be well tipped for their services. Also, groups were told to hold hands forming a human chain up the falls. This was suppose to make things safer but as we witnessed, this method of going up the falls is not a guarantee against falling. We saw a woman let go and she fell down the rocks during one of the steeper sections. She wasn't badly hurt but we imagined that she sustained some nice bruises. There are various points along the falls where you could get off the falls and back on the stairs to walk up the rest of the way. Not everyone there attempted to climb the falls as many were happy to just walk dry along the side on the stairs. We chose not to go with any of the groups which tend to go up the left side of the falls. We made our way up on our own mostly on the right side. With some breaks for photos, we made it all the way up the falls in about 30 minutes. Going with a group would have taken longer for sure. The water is a bit cool and if you have a wetsuit, it is highly suggested that you wear it for the climb. Cameras used there up the falls are also recommended to be water resistant since they likely will get wet. We left our digital camera on the ship and took one of those $25 underwater cameras. After climbing the falls, we headed back down to the relatively small but uncrowded beach where the ocean water was warmer until it was time to depart. The exit back at the top of the falls was strategically located at the end of a market so we did have to go through some locals who tried to sell us their souveniers. These locals who worked inside the Dunn's site were hustling but not as aggressively as those in the town of Ocho Rios. The shuttlebus arrived at the site parking lot on time as agreed. The total amount we spent including the park admission and the shuttle was $31 US for the two of us. Taking an organized tour through the cruiseship would have cost more than double this amount. So it is quite possible to tour Dunn's River Falls on your own rather than take the more expensive tours. We were glad that we did see Dunn's River Falls but we thought that it was not nearly as impressive as depicted on photos in travel brochures. Women Size 616750 001 Nike Air Foamposite Pro Yeezy,Ultralight backpacking? I remember when I first cut my toothbrush handle in half. I thought I was going light then, with thirty five pounds on my back for a weekend backpacking trip. Now I am going heavy if get near fifteen pounds. The biggest change was when I reduced the weight of the "big three." These are your backpack, sleeping bag and tent. This article, however, is about some of the "little" things I have learned along the way. They include weight saving tricks, but also ways to be safe and comfortable as well. To have warm hiking shoes in the morning, put them under your sleeping bag by your legs, or even in your sleeping bag if you have a plastic bag to put them in. I sometime keep my shoes warm by using them as a pillow it is more comfortable than you might think. Point one shoe each way, so they cradle your head, and lay a shirt or other piece of clothing over them. Use less stove fuel by cooking out of the wind. Block the wind with a improvised windscreen of some sort. Cooking time can double in even a slight breeze. Evaporative heat loss results from evaporation of moisture (this is why your body sweats to cool off). To reduce this form of heat loss, you need to stay as dry as you can. Wear your rain gear when walking through wet bushes, and don't sit directly on snow. Conductive heat loss results from heat being conducted away from your body by direct contact with colder things. Don't sit directly on cold rocks or snow use your sleeping pad, or sit on a log (wood is less conductive than rocks). The lightest pan? You probably won't find it in backpacking catalogs. Every titanium pan I've seen weighs more than the cheap aluminum pan I bought in a local dollar store. They make backpacking pans too thick. I removed the handle and added a wire hanging handle to my soup pan, and it weighs about two ounces. A light seat cushion can be made from a sleeping bag pad. Use an old basic blue foam pad. Cut a square about 12 inches square out of it. This will weigh about one ounce (3/8" pad). It makes a nice waterproof seat when you want to sit on a wet rock, log or on the ground. Pack it against your back inside your pack and it will also pad you from any sharp or clunky items. The cold wind might chill the front of your body, even though your back is hot and sweaty. When this happens, put your jacket on backwards, and leave it opened. This will keep your back cooler while protecting the front of your body. When it is hot, soak your hat in every stream or water source you pass. A wet hat is like a little air conditioner on your head. Try a wet bandana around your neck too. This trick works best in dry climates. Attach alligator clips to the top of your pack, and you'll always have an easy way to hang clothing to dry while you hike. If your damp clothes haven't dried by morning, put them on unless it is too cold. They'll dry quickly once you start hiking. Drying them this way is generally safer than allowing damp clothes to accumulate in your pack. One way you can lighten your load is to carry high calorie foods. Suppose you need 12,000 calories for a weekend trip. This could weigh from fifteen pounds down to four pounds, depending on the foods you select. Mixed nuts, for example, have twice as many calories per pound as bread. Plan for some variety, and balance the weight savings with decent nutritional choices, of course. Ultralight backpacking can still be healthy.

For seven years, he was an opal miner in Coober Pedy and occasionally helped the previous mailman with his run. Seven years ago, he bought the business, and has driven the mail trip more than 700 times. When you consider the run covers 600km in just one day, you might imagine the job to be quite a lonely one. Not for John. While the mail side of things is controlled by Australia Post, John has incorporated a spot of tourism into his days and thoroughly enjoys showing people a remote part of Australia not seen by many. John says it a two way thing his passengers learn about the Australian outback, and he learns about their lives. There are usually three to eight passengers with John, mainly in winter because of the intense summer heat. They are always amazed by the vastness and flatness of the area. You drive for hours without seeing so much as a hill. The mail run, possibly Australia longest, follows a dirt road triangle, starting and finishing in Coober Pedy, taking in Oodnadatta and William Creek. On the way, John delivers mail to five stations and two towns. He carries an average of 20 bags of mail each trip, as well as large and interesting packages. To a lot of people, John offers a lifeline and takes them goods they cannot just pop out and buy. Just out of Coober Pedy, you will see the 5500km dingo fence, the longest ever built, keeping the wild dogs separate from sheep and cattle. About 60km further on is the huge salt lake, Cadibarrawirracanna, Aboriginal for stars reflecting on water. The first mail stop is at the world largest cattle station, Anna Creek. At 23,000 square kilometres, it is about the size of Holland. Next drop is at the famous William Creek Pub. Locals collect their mail next time they are in where there is a permanent population of seven. Numbers do pick up in the tourist season! An hour further on is Nilpinna Station comparatively small at 4000 square kilometres. On the way to Peake Station, the road follows the historic Ghan railway track, and you will see South Australia longest single bridge. A little further on you can cool off in the Algebuckina waterhole. An hour further on is the Allendale homestead and then it another 20 minutes to Oodnadatta, the second point of the triangle. Mail for the entire population of 180 is dropped at the Pink Roadhouse, famous for its huge Oodna burger. From there you make your way back to Coober Pedy, passing the moon like landscape that was used for filming Mad Max with Mel Gibson.
